Understanding the Worship of Durga, Lakshmi, and Saraswathi
Navarathri is much more than a festival observed over nine nights and ten days. It is a carefully ordered spiritual journey that guides devotees through three essential stages of transformation.
The first three days are dedicated to Goddess Durga, the next three to Goddess Lakshmi, and the final three to Goddess Saraswathi. The festival then culminates on the tenth day with Vijaya Dasami—the day of divine victory and auspicious new beginnings.
This sacred progression carries a profound message:
- First, we seek the strength to remove what holds us back.
- Next, we cultivate the virtues and abundance needed to move forward.
- Finally, we receive the wisdom to understand and follow the right path.
Durga, Lakshmi, and Saraswathi are not separate or competing powers. They are different manifestations of the same Divine Mother—Adi Shakti—guiding us through every stage of life.
The First Three Days: Goddess Durga
The Strength to Overcome
The first three days of Navarathri are dedicated to Goddess Durga, the embodiment of courage, protection, and transformative power.
Before something new can be created, that which is harmful or no longer serving us must be removed. Goddess Durga gives devotees the strength to confront both external difficulties and the inner tendencies that obstruct spiritual growth.
These inner obstacles may include fear, anger, jealousy, pride, unhealthy attachments, self-doubt, or habits that keep us from living with clarity and purpose.
The battles of Goddess Durga against powerful asuras can therefore be understood on more than one level. They represent the eternal victory of dharma over adharma, but they also reflect the struggle within every human heart.
The first stage of Navarathri invites us to ask:
- What fears are preventing me from moving forward?
- Which habits or attitudes must I release?
- Where do I need greater courage and discipline?
- How can I protect peace and righteousness within my home?
We do not seek the blessings of Goddess Durga merely to fight the world around us. We seek Her strength to gain mastery over ourselves.
The Next Three Days: Goddess Lakshmi
Cultivating Divine Abundance
Once negative tendencies have been confronted, the spiritual journey moves toward Goddess Lakshmi.
Lakshmi is widely worshipped as the Goddess of wealth and prosperity, but Her blessings extend far beyond material riches. She represents all forms of auspicious abundance—good health, loving relationships, generosity, patience, gratitude, noble character, stability, and spiritual fulfillment.
Removing negativity creates an empty space. That space must then be filled with positive and divine qualities.
- It is not enough to remove anger; we must cultivate patience.
- It is not enough to overcome selfishness; we must develop generosity.
- It is not enough to abandon fear; we must strengthen faith.
- It is not enough to seek wealth; we must learn to use it responsibly.
The worship of Goddess Lakshmi teaches us that true prosperity is that which supports a peaceful, purposeful, and dharmic life.
During these three days, devotees may reflect upon the many blessings already present in their lives. Navarathri becomes an opportunity not only to ask for more, but also to recognize, protect, and share what the Divine has already provided.
The second stage of the journey invites us to ask:
- Am I using my blessings responsibly?
- Does my prosperity bring peace to my family and benefit others?
- What noble qualities should I cultivate within myself?
- Do I live with gratitude for what I have already received?
Goddess Lakshmi reminds us that the richest life is one filled with virtue, contentment, generosity, and devotion.
The Final Three Days: Goddess Saraswathi
Receiving Knowledge and Wisdom
The final three days of Navarathri are dedicated to Goddess Saraswathi, the source of knowledge, wisdom, speech, music, learning, and creativity.
After Goddess Durga helps us remove our inner obstacles and Goddess Lakshmi helps us cultivate divine qualities, we become prepared to receive the blessings of Saraswathi.
Knowledge is not simply the ability to collect information. True knowledge gives us discernment—the ability to recognize what is right, meaningful, and lasting.
Goddess Saraswathi blesses students with concentration and understanding, teachers with the ability to guide others, and musicians, dancers, writers, and artists with creativity and inspiration. Her grace is equally important for every devotee seeking spiritual knowledge and clarity.
We require wisdom at every stage of life. Strength without wisdom can become aggression. Wealth without wisdom can become greed. Talent without wisdom can become pride.
It is Saraswathi who teaches us how to use our strength, prosperity, and abilities for a higher purpose.
The third stage of the journey invites us to ask:
- Am I using my knowledge with humility?
- Do my words bring peace or create hurt?
- How can I use my education and talents to serve others?
- Am I continually willing to learn and grow?
Through the worship of Goddess Saraswathi, we seek not only academic success but also the inner wisdom required to live a thoughtful and meaningful life.
The Tenth Day: Vijaya Dasami
The Day of Divine Victory
The spiritual journey of Navarathri culminates on Vijaya Dasami.
"Vijaya" means victory. This sacred day celebrates the triumph of dharma over adharma, light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and divine strength over limitation.
The victory of Vijaya Dasami is also deeply personal. It represents the devotee who has received courage from Durga, divine abundance from Lakshmi, and wisdom from Saraswathi—and is now prepared to begin again with renewed clarity.
For this reason, Vijaya Dasami is considered especially auspicious for beginning education, music, dance, spiritual studies, and other meaningful endeavors.
Children may participate in Vidyaarambham, marking their formal introduction to learning. Students and artists seek the blessings of Goddess Saraswathi before resuming their books, instruments, and creative work.
The tenth day reminds us that victory is not simply defeating something outside ourselves. The greatest victory is overcoming ignorance, fear, ego, and limitation within.
Three Goddesses, One Divine Mother
Durga, Lakshmi, and Saraswathi represent three inseparable divine powers.
Durga gives us the strength to remove. Lakshmi gives us the grace to cultivate. Saraswathi gives us the wisdom to understand.
We need all three.
- Without Durga, we may lack the courage to change.
- Without Lakshmi, we may lack the virtues and resources required to grow.
- Without Saraswathi, we may lack the wisdom to use our blessings properly.
The sequence of Navarathri teaches us that lasting transformation takes place gradually. We first purify ourselves, then nurture what is good, and finally seek the knowledge that leads us toward truth.

Sri Ganesha Temple invites devotees and families to experience this sacred progression during Sharada Navarathri Mahotsavam 2026, from Sunday, October 11 through Tuesday, October 20.
The temple's daily observances beautifully reflect the traditional journey through the three forms of the Divine Mother:
- Days 1–3: Sri Durga Special Archana
- Days 4–6: Sri Lakshmi Special Archana
- Days 7–9: Sri Saraswathi Special Archana
- Day 10: Vijaya Dasami Special Puja and Vidyaarambham
The ten-day celebration will also include daily Vishesha Homams, Sri Durga Abhishekam, Lalitha Sahasranama Archana, Aarathi, Nada Samarpanam, Kala Samarpanam, and the major observances of Durga Ashtami, Mahanavami, and Vijaya Dasami.
Devotees may participate throughout the Mahotsavam or attend during the days associated with the form of the Divine Mother whose blessings they especially seek.
