The Healing Hymn of Guruvayur: The Story Behind Narayaneeyam

Among the countless devotional works dedicated to Lord Vishnu, few are as deeply revered as the Narayaneeyam. Chanted daily in temples and homes around the world, especially at the sacred Guruvayur Temple in Kerala, the Narayaneeyam is much more than a literary masterpiece—it is a profound expression of devotion, surrender, and unwavering faith in Lord Guruvayurappan.

For centuries, devotees have recited the Narayaneeyam while praying for good health, peace of mind, spiritual strength, and the compassionate grace of Lord Krishna. Behind this extraordinary composition lies one of the most inspiring stories in Hindu tradition—a story that reminds us that sincere devotion has the power to transform suffering into grace.

Who Was Melpathur Narayana Bhattathiri?

Melpathur Narayana Bhattathiri was one of Kerala's greatest Sanskrit scholars and an accomplished master of grammar, Vedic literature, and philosophy. He was also a devoted disciple of the renowned scholar Achyuta Pisharati, whom he deeply revered as his Guru.

According to tradition, Achyuta Pisharati was afflicted with severe rheumatic paralysis. Unable to bear the suffering of his beloved teacher, Bhattathiri prayed that his Guru's illness might instead be transferred to him.

Moved by his extraordinary devotion, his prayer was fulfilled.

His Guru gradually recovered, while Bhattathiri himself became afflicted with a painful and debilitating illness that left him almost unable to move.

"Begin with the Fish..."

Seeking relief from his suffering, Bhattathiri approached the great Malayalam poet Thunchaththu Ezhuthachan for guidance.

Instead of prescribing medicine, Ezhuthachan simply said:

"Meen Thottu Thudanguka." — "Begin with the fish."

At first the instruction seemed mysterious.

Bhattathiri soon understood that Ezhuthachan was referring to the Dashavataras of Lord Vishnu, beginning with Matsya Avatar, the Fish Incarnation.

Inspired by this divine guidance, Bhattathiri travelled to Guruvayur, surrendered himself completely to Lord Guruvayurappan, and began composing what would become one of the greatest devotional works in Hindu literature.

One Hundred Days Before Lord Guruvayurappan

Standing before Lord Guruvayurappan each day despite intense physical pain, Bhattathiri composed one Dasakam (chapter) every day.

Beginning with the story of creation and the Matsya Avatar, he gradually narrated the entire glory of Lord Narayana—from creation itself through the Dashavataras, the teachings of the Bhagavatam, and finally the enchanting Leelas of Lord Krishna.

Every verse became both a prayer and an offering.

Every Dasakam reflected complete surrender to the Lord.

Tradition tells us that as the Narayaneeyam progressed, Bhattathiri's health gradually improved.

When he completed the 100th Dasakam, he experienced complete recovery, attributing his healing entirely to the boundless grace of Lord Guruvayurappan.

For this reason, the Narayaneeyam continues to be lovingly associated with healing, hope, and unwavering devotion.

What is the Narayaneeyam?

The Narayaneeyam is a poetic condensation of the Srimad Bhagavatam, consisting of approximately 1,036 Sanskrit verses arranged into 100 Dasakams.

Rather than simply summarizing scripture, it beautifully narrates the glory of Lord Narayana—from creation, through His various incarnations, culminating in the life and divine play (Leelas) of Lord Krishna, before concluding with a magnificent description of Lord Guruvayurappan.

Many devotees lovingly describe the Narayaneeyam as "the essence of the Bhagavatam."

Why Do Devotees Chant the Narayaneeyam?

For generations, devotees have chanted the Narayaneeyam while praying for:

  • Good health and healing
  • Peace of mind
  • Protection during difficult times
  • Family well-being
  • Spiritual strength
  • Devotion to Lord Krishna
  • Inner peace and surrender

Although many associate the Narayaneeyam with healing because of Bhattathiri's miraculous recovery, its greatest blessing is the transformation of the heart. Every verse invites the devotee to cultivate humility, gratitude, and complete surrender to the Divine.

The Narayaneeyam reminds us that while physical healing is a blessing, the greatest miracle is the awakening of unwavering faith.
